There is something formidably fastidious about McNulty's. Their sense of precision, their obsessive care, makes them the Apple Computers of fish'n'chips, which means, of course, that Brian McNulty is the Steve Jobs of the world of fish'n'chips.
This is no idle comparison: Mr McNulty and his team are chasing perfection – their chips must be perfect, so they must have the correct potatos with the correct level of dry matter. Their fish must be as fresh as cod and haddock can be. When you get those things right, then you can chase perfection, and it's a perfection that means people drive for miles and miles to get a takeaway from the little shop. Of course the menu offers more than just fish and chips – there re burgers, Scotch eggs, chicken dishes – but it is for haddock an chips or cod and chips that McNulty's is renowned, and has been renowned since 1945. Like Steve Jobs, Brian McNulty is a tweaker, always finding ways to make things better, improving bit by bit, day by day, all the better to be the Apple of your eye.
