Midleton Saturday Market: What you need to know

Kate O’Donovan will be grilling the sausages she has brought from O’Flynn’s in Cork and will be selling her fine Marble Hall Marinades. The Ballymaloe stall always has lots of interesting vegetables from their gardens, as well as fine eggs, and even free-range ducks from time to time: in summertime look for tomatillos and other rarities.

There are good breads from Marog O’Brien’s Farmgate shop and restaurant, frozen prepared organic beef from Dan Aherne, matured Ardsallagh cheeses made by Jane Murphy and what you have to look for in particular are the mustard and black pepper cheeses which Jane only sells in the market, and there will be lots of other farmhouse cheeses sold at her stall by Fiona; there will be Hederman smoked fish, Willy Scannell’s Ballycotton potatoes (get there early or these will be sold out), Glenribben Organics from West Waterford, and lots of other interesting producers. Mighty fun, and not to be missed.

We bought:

• Three-year-old Ardsallagh and smoked Ardsallagh

• Oisin goat’s farmhouse cheese

• Ballycotton potatoes

• Glenribben Swiss chard

• Hederman smoked eel

• Ballymaloe brown bread mix

• Gubbeen hot bacon roll with Ballymaloe jalapeno relish

• Grilled O’Flynn’s sausage with Marble Hall relish
