Eamon Barrett drove 300kms north to eat at the MacNean. After 299.5kms, his wheels gave up. When he finally got into the MacNean, in tiny little Blacklion, the staff said “It’s a pleasure to have you here.”


The kitchen sent out two Kir Royale straight away. “Stress? What stress?” asks Mr Barrett. Bridgestone editors: they’re tough. And, after 300kms, they are also mighty hungry, No better place to be then, than Neven and Amelda Maguire’s ground-breaking restaurant. And the highlights?
“West Coast lobster plate with lobster ravioli, potato salad, sausage and coconut soup / Mosaic of quail stuffed with wild mushrooms served on a bed of pea risotto with a grape, celery and walnut salad / Amazing sautéed freshwater crayfish with linguini pasta and shellfish foam and for mains Irish lamb three ways - an outstanding dish of 2-star quality - with roast loin, braised shoulder and neck stew / Line-caught wild seabass served with borlotti beans, pasta and cep veloute. Desserts were fabulous, staff are wonderful.” And 300 happy kms home.
