If you can define style as being the preserve of people who have the nerve to be defiant about a lack of style, then Simon McCance is the Christian Dior of his alternative style universe. Christian Dior? Hell, this guy is John Galliano and Alexander McQueen all in one.

The carelessness about the style of Ginger is so funky, so proud, that you would have to travel to Barcelona to see other rooms that have such insousiance, such freedom from the tyranny of design.
As with the room, so with the food. Mr McCance has always had the most individualistic of culinary signatures, his food seeming to pull in influences but never being subsumed by them: haunch of venison with oyster mushrooms and red wine; parsnip and chickpea fritter; puff pastry pie of spinach and ricotta. He cooks the way Aussie and Spanish guys do, bringing flavours to dishes that then positively sparkle with clean, fresh energy and taste, but presenting the food in such a confident, unclichéd way that the overall content of Ginger – its bohemianism, defiance, originality, its style – become all of a piece.
