There is a queue at lunchtime every day at the Sage, and that tells you all you need to know about Limerick city’s heavy hitter.

They do the good thing here, calmly, charmingly, unselfconsciously, good food from their knockout
breakfast offerings – great granola, muffins and breads – through a cracking lunch offer that has just the kind of food you want to eat. “Pan-Asian and rustic European” is how Valerie O’Connor summarises the cooking, and they love to take things apart, like the goat’s cheese coated with couscous and black sesame seeds with baby leaves, green olive tapenade and mango salsa. “An edgy way to serve the bistro staple, with a beasty crunch on the outside and dressings full of attitude”, says Valerie, and that is just right. The lamb’s liver with cider jus and leek and wild mushroom stuffing plays the bistro standard straight, whilst tiger prawns with coconut tempura is classic food for nibbling and sharing. Desserts are outstanding: classic baked orange cheesecake, classic chocolate cake and the very best carrot cake. “Desserts to die for”, says Val. Yep.
