The Limerick Leader, that’s Mike and Siobhan’s Sage Café. This place has been, as they say locally, “out the door” ever since they opened. “A food phenomenon... a roaring success” is how Valerie O’Connor describes it, and how fine and dandy for Limerick to have a food phenomenon.

So, what’s phenomenal? First off, don’t get there late, or you won’t get a table, and remember you can’t book. Second, when you do get a table, settle in for some sharp cooking: artichoke risotto with sweet potato and pancetta; lamb’s liver with mustard crushed potatoes, rosemary and lentil jus and crispy red onions; their fine beef hot-pot with baby beetroot and mushrooms; hearty braised lamb shank with cannellini bean and potato stew. This is rich, rustic, savoury food, and they don’t put a foot wrong, certainly not when it comes to a baked orange cheesecake that is, says Valerie, “the best baked cheesecake I’ve eaten”. Sage is successful, admirable, and absolutely spot on, with great staff who are right into the buzz of the place. Ace.
