Struggle and Resistance!

Flags being raised by determined men is one of the most potent symbols
of struggle and resistance, but a casual trader's stall umbrellas being
lowered by Gardai as they impound foods is not the sort of symbol one
wishes to see in modern, food-loving Ireland.
The symbolism may have been lost on the Gardai who dismantled Toby Simmonds'
umbrellas and placed his olives behind bars, but for the crowd who watched
the events of January 11th in Bantry, West Cork, the symbolism of the
dismantling of the stall of the man who single-handedly has done more
to invigorate or market culture was rather difficult to swallow: see
our story and photographic report.
Elsewhere there is good food loving news; yards of chocolate (well,
metres, actually) a pair of hot new Dublin restaurants are appraised;
we have an insider's tour of the ethnic delights of Portobello, and
introduce you to some interesting wines. And as Valentine's Day approaches
we find a recipe that let's you know whether you're in the presence
of a 'spontaneous lover' or a 'timorous nibbler'.
