France Today
Two
decades ago, France was the epicentre of the culinary universe.
And, steadily over the last twenty years, France has inexorably
ceded that position. Despite its many glories, no one now thinks
of France as being the avant garde of the food world. As its cinema
has tumbled from the glories of Godard, Bresson, Truffaut, Rivette
and the other extraordinary movie makers who built the nouvelle
vague, into the self-conscious twee of Amelie, so French food
has failed to weather the intellectual advances of recent times.
France has become passé, however brilliant it may still be.
And finally, France comes to Dublin: you are just in time to join the party of Chateauneuf heads in town for a ginormous tasting of great French wine and the best Irish produce. The tasting takes place in Newman House on Tuesday.
Here are three reports, from regular Megabytes contributors, Paul Flynn of The Tannery, Susan Holland of The Customs House, and Dublin correspondent Leslie Williams, on three diverse experiences with French culinary culture.
