More Leeside Success
University College, Cork has wisely bestowed a honorary doctorate on the
inimitable Myrtle Allen, of Shanagarryıs Ballymaloe House. This richly deserved
accolade follows the granting of Mrs Allenıs first doctorate last year,
from Trinity College, Dublin. Coming at the end of the century and the beginning
of the new century, the doctorates reflect the outstanding achievements
of a woman who brings her ferocious discernment happily into the new millennium,
having established herself as the moral guardian and intellectual guiding
light of Irish food for the last forty years.
Professor Peter Woodman proposed Mrs Allen 'for her contribution to cuisine
in Ireland and for giving us the confidence to believe in our own resources'.
Next stop, the Presidency, we reckon.
