The Paddy Keogh 6-Pack
He is a smart guy, Paddy Keogh, boss of Mullingar's Wines Direct. We asked
him to create a six-pack for wine lovers, and here is what he came up with:
La Bergerie de l'Hortus white 2001 €11.85:Jean Orliac's intriguing blend of viognier, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay is a beaut: racy, fresh, vinified to a crisp, satisfying intensity, and more proof that SW France is the epicentre of the new style of French winemaking.
Brock's Reef cabernet/merlot €12.30: a refreshingly clean, slightly minty red from South Africa; we likes the treacly afternote and the slight caress of oak.
Chateau de Garras 2001 €14.25: a gentle red wine from the premieres cotes de Bordeaux appellation, this is one of those intriguing wines which doesn't try too hard to knock you out with technical winemaking, a fact which makes its easy, relaxed charm all the more delightful.
Fattoria La Caselle Chianti 2002 €12: there is a nice tarry aftertaste, as one would expect from a well-made chianti, though this red is still young, and the fruit flavours will develop if you give it some more time to age in bottle.
Nuit blanche 2002 €11.60: we have always admired Luc Lapeyre's red wines from SW France, and this white is another peachy performance. Pale gold, with notes of elderflower, this is delicious winemaking using an inspired blend of muscat and chardonnay.
Fattori & Graney Pinot Grigio 2002 €12.75 pale as straw in colour, this has honeycomb notes with a toasty nose, and tastes like a restrained chardonnay. Quite lovely winemaking: mature, calm and sophisticated.
