The Wines of Bertie Eden in the Languedoc

Wine Label

You really do have to admire a wine maker who labels one of his wines as simply: DGS.

DGS? "Damn Good Shit" according to Bertie Eden, of Comte Cathare wines, from the Languedoc in south-western France. Mr Eden farms bio-dynamically, so the fruit from that Syrah or the zing from that 50/50 mix of Viognier and Marsanne comes from plenty of fresh cow and sheep manure.

We like the Marsanne/Viognier in particular, with its energetic impact and squeezed out fruit, though the Domaine Begude Chardonnay 2000 is no slouch either, with a minerally vigour that is hard to resist.

Look out for Bertie's whacky Syrah crosses, Syrache (with Grenache), Syrbec (with Malbec) and Syrcab (with Cab Sauv). Oddbins sells the range, but having had the dire experience of trying to get parked within hailing distance of their Blackrock, Co Dublin shop - and failing - we will be ordering them from James Nicholson and taking advantage of Jim's efficient delivery service:
