Sue Lawrence's Scottish Kitchen

How could you not love a book by a writer who owns a porridge spurtle. No, we don't know what a porridge spurtle is either, but we like the sound of it, and we're certain Sue Lawrence - one of the sharpest, smartest food writers around - knows just what to do with it.
"Scottish Kitchen" has many of the classic dishes, but Sue Lawrence's annotation and additions contemporise everything she cooks, so lemon sole comes with noodles - and even with the radical and deeply un-Scottish suggestion that a salad might be a good idea on the side - herrings can come with couscous, and haggis gets made into tartlets with red onion marmalade. Witty and fun, the book is valuable for those of us who imagined that Scotland offered little more than deep fried mars bars and pizzas (we kid you not) and good single malts.
