The Jephson family's super supermarket is one of the treasures of the county and the country. Last time we shopped here, virtually everything we bought came from the counties of Waterford and Cork, with just a little bit of our money going further north, thanks to a superb Sheridan's duck confit, which was produced in Cavan.
Few food miles, superlative Irish produce, and a magical experience, thanks to brilliant staff. It seems ridiculous, but everything sold here is good. In particular, look out for the foods of the season, like Mairead Halley's fantastic fruits - her greengages are amazing - or the San Marzano tomatoes which Currids of Grantstown grow exclusively for Ardkeen. Irish apples arrive in from O'Dwyers of Piltown, and there is a great array of vegetables from Tom Cleary of Wellingtonbridge, a grower also highly praised by Michael Quinn of Waterford Castle. In a perfect food retailing world, every supermarket would be like Ardkeen.
