"Sarah Gornall is someone who not only espouses perfection, but somehow makes perfection look easy." That's how the Irish Examiner's Mary Leland summed up Sarah Gornall's modus operandi in this achingly beautiful 19th-century rectory.

Ms Gornall has trained as chef, gardener and interior designer and it's as if all of her education has been designed to lead her to create this impeccably beautiful house. She is one of those rare Irish people who really understands the feng shui of having the right object in the right place in order to create the right aesthetic. It all adds up to a wonderful new arrival. Note, if you want Sarah to cook dinner - and you should "It's all out of the garden and I love doing it," she says - then give her a little advance notice.

Sarah Gornall

"There was tremendous style to everything". "My grandmother, Muriel McCall, who lived in Westmeath in great style for all of her 97 years. Everything was done beautifully"

We don't talk much in Ireland about aesthetic influences, about the people who shape our choices when it comes to where and how we try to live. But when Sarah Gornall talks about the people who shaped her aesthetic sensibilities - her granny, and Ian Cameron, the wealthy father of England's current prime Minister, who brought "tremendous style to everything" - you begin to understand someone for whom aesthetics is not simply paramount: it is life-blood itself.

She has learnt well. Kilcolman Rectory is an utterly singular house, a chance to bath in the beauty of aesthetic splendour, such as few other places offer. To do things "beautifully"; drives her every action, but she knows the culture of beauty, she has come so far for beauty. Interestingly, she studied in London's Cordon Bleu school with Rosemary Hume, collaborator with the arch florist and cookery teacher, Constance Spry. That ramrod-straight, English post-war aesthetic lives on in Kilcolman, perfectly rendered.
